They are essential amino acids that account for about 35% of the essential amino acids in muscle proteins. Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) refer to a group of proteins with a branched-like structure. It has been well established that BCAAs, especially leucine, promote muscle protein synthesis and help stimulate the repair processes that ultimately lead to larger and stronger muscles. These amino acids are used to help rebuild and repair damaged muscle from workouts. BCAAs have been used to ease muscle soreness and improve muscle function.

    What are BCAAs?
    BCAA is a general term for the essential amino acids* valine, leucine, and isoleucine that are metabolized by the body and used as sources of muscle energy. They are referred to as Branched Chain Amino Acids because the molecular structure of these three amino acids includes branches. *These are amino acids that the body cannot produce itself.
    Why should I take BCAAs?
    Increases Muscle Growth
    The BCAA leucine activates a certain pathway in the body that stimulates muscle protein synthesis, which is the process of making muscle.

    Decreases Muscle Soreness
    BCAAs have been shown to decrease muscle damage, which may help reduce the length and severity of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). Several studies show that BCAAs decrease protein breakdown during exercise and decrease levels of creatine kinase, which is an indicator of muscle damage.

    Reduces Exercise Fatigue
    BCAAs may be useful in decreasing exercise-induced fatigue, but they are unlikely to improve exercise performance. 

    Your muscles use BCAAs during exercise, causing levels in your blood to decrease. When blood levels of BCAAs decline, levels of the essential amino acid tryptophan in your brain increase.

    In your brain, tryptophan is converted to serotonin, a brain chemical that is thought to contribute to the development of fatigue during exercise.
    How often should I take BCAAs?
    It’s important to know just how many BCAAs you should take per day. According to a recent study, most people need about 91 milligrams of BCAAs per pound of body weight, but most BCAAs supplements are dosed using grams. Don’t forget to convert those milligrams to grams, or you’ll end up taking way too much which can cause fatigue, nausea and headaches.

    .091 grams (91mg) x 150 pound person = 13.6 grams of BCAAs per day.

    (To find your perfect dose, just take your body weight, then multiply it by 91, then take that number and multiply by .001 to find the average amount of BCAAs you need per day.)
